What Can Professionals Do to Help Flooded Homes?

5/11/2022 (Permalink)

Our Experienced Restorers Can Help with Mitigation and Cleaning After a Flood.

Floods are common enough to the San Leandro area to warrant a preparation plan. Homeowners should know what to do in case of these emergencies, and often that means whom you can call to help when contending with the damage that these circumstances can cause. There are multiple strategies for restoring and cleaning up after a flood loss in your home, and our SERVPRO team can help.

How Does SERVPRO Address Standing Floodwater?

One of the immediate obstacles to flood damage in Texarkana homes is standing water in the property's lower levels. Because traditional extraction devices might not be useful in these situations, namely, due to solids and debris, more powerful units must get used instead. Some of these options include:

  • Self-priming trash pumps
  • Truck-mount extractors
  • Wet vacuums

Despite how overwhelming flood losses can be for area homes, our SERVPRO of Texarkana team can help with a fast and reliable response. Give us a call today at (903) 832-4400.

7 Industrial Safety Tips For TexarkanaBusinesses

4/27/2022 (Permalink)

  1. Have an emergency action plan. Do you have an evacuation route? Do all employees know where to exit and where to meet after? Ensure all employees are briefed on these critical details at the time of hire.
  2. Conduct regular workplace inspections. On a casual stroll from one side of your workplace to another, you probably won't notice many safety risks because you won't be actively looking for them. Make it a point to do a regular workplace inspection. That way, you'll search for things that could pose a danger and spot things you've never seen before. A safety expert can also inspect your facility to identify risks and provide solutions.
  3. Offer ongoing safety training. When employees are up to date on job safety, they're more likely to work safely. Regular safety training sessions benefit everyone and create safety habits.
  4. If you're an employer, invite and involve your employees in safety planning; obtain their insight, give and take suggestions, and ensure that everyone is on the same page.
  5. Wear a breathing mask at all times; mainly if you deal with dangerous or toxic chemicals or fumes, your workspace has debris, dust, and other flying particles.

  6. Take breaks In this hectic and fast-paced work environment, and there is a greater risk for ailments and injuries since the employees maybe are overworked, exhausted, and unable to concentrate. Breaks taken off and on will help you keep afresh and focus well.

  7. Be responsible for your safety. Your safety is your foremost responsibility. Life is precious: rather than be remorseful after an injury; it's imperative to maintain an attitude of caution begin implementing all safety measures beneficial to you while promoting safety at work. As per the requirement of your job, wear appropriate clothing and safety equipment. When in need of help, request for the same. Safety appliances are not to be avoided. Check tools before use. Be careful when undertaking a task under pressure or in a hurry, as hurrying could lead to carelessness, and carelessness could then culminate in an accident. A firm commitment on your part towards a safe work culture will enhance your productivity and provoke your co-workers to think likewise.

SERVPRO of Texarkana has what it takes to handle any safety-related problem, "Like it never even happened." Call us at (903) 832-4400.

3 Categories of Mold Personal Protective Equipment

4/8/2022 (Permalink)

Personal Protective Equipment for Mold Remediation

The mold cleanup process can disturb mold spores causing them to become airborne where they can be breathed in, get in the eyes or land on the skin. Face masks and other protective equipment can protect those doing cleaning from exposure. There are three categories of personal protective equipment for mold cleanup and removal. The appropriate category is based on the size of the area and the concentration of mold spores.

1. Minimum PPE
Minimum PPE includes gloves, goggles/eye protection, and an N-95 respirator. It is appropriate to use minimum PPE for small areas with mold damage. The N95 mask covers the mouth and nose, protecting the wearer from airborne particles, but does not provide eye protection.

2. Limited PPE
Limited PPE includes the use of half-face or full-face air-purifying respirators equipped with P100 filter cartridges. This level of PPE is recommended for areas between 10 and 100 square feet. The face masks used at this level provide a greater level of particle filtration than the N95 masks, though the half-masks still do not protect the eyes and neither option is capable of filtering out vapors or gases.

3. Full PPE
Full PPE includes a full-face, powered air-purifying respirator. This level of PPE is recommended for areas that exceed 100 square meters or for smaller spaces where high concentrations of mold spores are expected and jobs that will expose workers for extended periods. These respirators protect the entire face and head and have greater filtering capability than the masks in the other categories. These respirators require training to be used properly. Additionally, disposable clothing may be recommended for some medium and large jobs.
A professional mold remediation team in is equipped with and trained to use the proper face masks and other PPE for your job. The safest way to handle mold removal is to call a professional.

What to Do About Bad Odors

3/14/2022 (Permalink)

An odor is comprised of tiny gas particles that are measured in microns. For comparison, the diameter of a human hair is measured at about 100 microns. Little odor particles (bubbles of gas) are about 4 microns in size. That is tiny and helps to explain how odor travels so easily through the air, and why certain odor particles that have settled on objects can be so invasive and difficult to remove.

Consumers have many deodorizing products to select from (too many). The majority of deodorizers are nothing more than masking agents (cover ups for unpleasant odors). Masking products can do a nice job of hiding unpleasant odors while these unpleasant smelling odors dissipate. Unfortunately, many odors linger and will outlast the masking agent. These “bad or strong” odors are usually from wet and oily sources such as: cooking oils, grease, urine, vomit, tobacco smoke, skunk spray, soot residues and others. Attempting to cover up these odors simply won’t produce lasting or satisfactory results. Success in eliminating strong odors requires thorough cleaning of the contaminated surfaces using special cleaning agents designed to tackle each specific source… the stink just won’t go away until the odor source is removed or neutralized. Some odors can last for years.

This is where the science of cleaning and deodorizing comes into play. Experts such as the technicians at SERVPRO of Texarkana understand the PH and chemical makeup of odor sources. They’re trained and even certified in correct odor removal procedures including how to apply effective professional cleaning agents that are not available to the consumer.

If your home, office or commercial facility has a difficult odor problem, we can help. Please call SERVPRO of Texarkana at 903-832-4400 to make it "Like it never even happened.”

Why Does All of the Equipment Need to Run All of the Time?

2/24/2022 (Permalink)

Consumers wonder why fans and dehumidifiers need to run all of the time, especially after the surface water has been removed from their home in Oakland. Once the leak or broken pipe has been repaired, and all of the surface water vacuumed from floors and cavities, can’t everything be left to dry on its own?

SERVPRO has been providing water removal services in Texarkana and surrounding areas for over fifteen years. Our professionally trained team has the experience and equipment to deal with all types of emergencies, both large and small. Many of our clients are unaware that moisture from water leaks and overflows can cause drywall and particle board structures to swell if not dried immediately. Also, mold colonies can become established in as little as 24 to 48 hours. We need to remove all of the moisture as quickly as possible. Turning off equipment risks further damage and mold growth.

At SERVPRO, we take the following steps to dry your home completely:

  • Remove excess water using pumps as needed
  • We use water extractors on floors and vacuums in small cavities
  • SERVPRO installs dehumidifiers and air movers to remove all moisture

The last step removes all remaining moisture until the humidity levels in your home have returned to normal.

Can the Equipment Be Turned off at Night to Save Money?

Many people want to turn off the equipment at night to save electrical charges. If the client is staying in the home while moisture is being removed, many would like to turn off the equipment to sleep at night. SERVPRO experts emphasize:

  • We use energy-efficient air movers and dehumidifiers
  • Avoiding the growth of mold is extremely important since mold can cause health effects.

Depending on the water damage location and insurance coverage, clients may want to consider moving out of their home for several days while we dry your home returning humidity levels to normal.

Call SERVPRO of Texarkana (903) 832-4400 to assist with water removal and restoration of your home.

Fire Damage Restoration Projects

2/7/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Offers IICRC Certified Fire Damage Restoration Services

After a fire starts inside your home, mitigation requires quite a few steps. When things inside a home get burned there are many other problems the initial blaze likely cause. The flames and heat created by a fire ruin items and smoke spreads throughout the house leaving behind soot residues and pungent odors.

Various types of damage get caused when different kinds of materials get burned. SERVPRO's fire damage technicians utilize different restoration methods when dealing with many kinds of fuels burned in the blaze. Every step of the process takes a combination of the many mitigation chemicals, techniques, and equipment.

The first step to any restoration project is to make sure the area is safe for workers and occupants. Fires often create unsafe areas when parts of the building's structure get burned. Any potential hazards immediately get repaired, or if the area is still not safe, then it gets blocked off, and warning signs get posted in the region.

Next, our SERVPRO emergency restoration team inspects your entire building to see exactly where damage occurred. After we find all of the areas in the house that got affected by the burn, we look and see how severe the damage is in each area. Based on the severity of the burn problems we decide to either remove, resurface, or clean the building materials and contents affected.

Removing and replacing items is the most expensive of the three processes and only gets used in cases of extreme damage. If the item appears to be burnt too badly to clean, then sometimes the materials get sanded down so that the charred part gets removed. We then coat the burned material with a specialized sealant paint to seal in any remaining foul odors.

In many cases, even sometimes if the soot residue is really thick, cleaning restores smoke damage issues. When cleaning walls and ceilings, we usually use different methods to ensure the job gets completed efficiently. When using dry sponges to clean off soot residues from surfaces, we start from the top and work down to prevent soils from dropping onto a clean area and creating secondary damage. When wet cleaning surfaces we do the opposite and work from the bottom up so that the chemicals do not create extra damage from streaking.

When completing any restoration project, we use a combination of the IICRC certified techniques and processes so that we complete the job as efficiently as possible. For professional help cleaning soils created by fire and smoke, call SERVPRO of Texarkana at (903) 832-4400 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Roof Damages Can Allow Flooding In Your Residence

10/5/2021 (Permalink)

Taking care of your home means taking the time and the effort to ensure that all of its components are working up to their expectations. Neglecting processes like roof inspections on an annual or semi-annual basis can leave you unaware when storms have caused substantial damages to the support system for your roof or individual shingles. One point of weakness can be all that is necessary to allow water to flow into your home from runoff or torrential rainfall.

Flood damages in your home can spread quickly to the point of being out of control. Especially when the flood waters enter through an area like the attic, they can widen out to affect multiple rooms simultaneously as gravity pulls the water towards the lower levels of your house. Combating these effects requires experienced technicians with specialized training in water restoration like you find with our SERVPRO team.

From the moment that our highly trained crew arrives at your house, we get to work quickly on assessing the point of entry for the damage your home has sustained. If the damage is not substantial in this area, we can board or tarp over this point of entry until the appropriate measures can get taken to reconstruct this damage to your roof.

The focus of our SERVPRO technicians following that step is to mitigate your loss by removing at-risk items as quickly as possible from all of the affected areas. This step is known as packing out, and it involves taking these items to a safe location for evaluation and focused restoration where required. Meanwhile, the restoration to your home has begun, and these removed items get returned following the successful restoration of the damage to your house.

As you can see, our professional restoration team goes to great lengths to navigate you through the often stressful experience of combating flood damages. If you have an emergency like this that you face in your home, you can always count on our SERVPRO of Texarkana water damage technicians to respond quickly and work efficiently to bring your home back to the way it should be. Give us a call 24/7 at (903) 832-4400.

Why Our Professionals Are The Most Qualified

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

Leaking or burst pipes can leave you with a massive restoration bill if you do not take the right steps. Part of taking the right steps is a swift response because leaving standing water in your property for long leads to further deterioration. As an IICRC certified restorer we are conversant with ASD, Applied Structural Drying, so we use the most suitable approaches to remove water from your Property.

The amount of water damage into your property may determine what steps to take for efficient water removal. Water that covers most of the rooms can take days to remove, and dry all affected areas thus requiring the occupants to move out. Our SERVPRO technicians rely on high capacity resources such as truck-mounted water extractors to quicken the restoration process reducing the time people spend away from their properties.

Water spills can soil your property necessitating through cleanup. Some likely sources of such soiling include food remains and detergents if the leak originates from an appliance such as a dishwasher, and dyes from non-colorfast fabrics. Failure to clean the properly can lead to serious problems in future including stains and bad odor. Our SERVPRO technicians combine the use of tools and professional cleaning agents to clean affected areas to sanitary levels. For example, the heating capability in our water extractors helps ease the cleanup process.

After removing all standing water, there is a need to dry any excess moisture left in materials. Drying can take a long time because it works through evaporation. Our SERVPRO team takes different approaches to expedite evaporation. One option is to run air movers in the wet areas increasing the evaporation rate. We also use plastic sheets to create smaller sections in large rooms which help reduce the volume of air that runs through dehumidifiers for moisture extraction.

Working with a professional restorer helps you control the outcome . Call SERVPRO of Texarkana (903) 832-4400 to help restore your property. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

How Our Experts Will Restore Your Home After A Fire

9/9/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke can often be one of the most troublesome effects to overcome after disaster impacts your residence. From small localized events to widespread structural damages, smoke can penetrate far beyond the source of the flames to affect many areas and items within the property. Our SERVPRO professionals get equipped with the latest equipment to provide efficient and effective service in removing harsh odors and residues from the premises following widespread smoke damages. This leading equipment can make our franchise a wise choice for those looking to reduce restoration costs without jeopardizing the quality of the completed product.

These machines can help clean an environment from not only harsh odors, but also germs, pollutants, lingering smoke, and other needs for sanitation. Best of all, these small machines can safely get used around pets and humans.

Thermal foggers are another piece of equipment vital to odor removal when our SERVPRO technicians are on site. Professional Disaster Restoration

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

According to the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) there are a couple of reasons to choose a professional over doing it yourself. Below are a few reasons:

  • The process of fire and water restoration is very involved when it is performed properly.
  • With quick reaction time and the appropriate skill set, a technician can help to prevent further damage and repair that which has already been done
  • The process and equipment used during fire and water restoration will vary from case to case, since different materials require their own unique care.
  • For fire damage, general cleaning is done to remove ash and soot from ceiling to floor.
  • The quick remediation of the problem is important for more than repairs, it is also a health consideration
  • Choose a company for fire and water restoration with the appropriate licenses and proof that they have the proper insurance.
  • Whether the work to be done is in a commercial or residential location, technicians with experience and certification should perform the damage recovery.

Drying Chambers

1/12/2021 (Permalink)

An effective drying chamber will completely contain a water loss affected area within minutes. The containment can be accomplished practically anywhere in the structure.

Once the poly sheeting used for containment is placed along with the drying equipment, the drying process begins. The Drying Chamber restricted any moisture to transfer into and out of the water loss affected area. This will also stop secondary damage at the beginning of the job, and later enhance the dry-down by preventing moist air from migrating into your drying chamber. We minimize the area that we need to dry. By staying focused on just the affected area. Each step in the drying process is important, and the first step – creating a drying chamber.

If you have a water loss call SERVPRO of Texarkana immediately to mitigate the loss and dry the materials. 903-832-4400.

Undetected Water Damage in Your Home

12/3/2020 (Permalink)

Water doesn’t have to burst from pipes or come from a bad flood to be a problem in your home. Sometimes, undetected water damage can cause the biggest headache. There are five tells that there’s water damage going undetected in your home.

  1. Stains on walls and ceilings. – Nobody purposefully looks up at their ceiling. However, it is important to thoroughly check the ceilings in your home for stains. There might be a bath tub or shower leak from one floor to the next, or your ceiling could be leaking into the attic.
  2. Musty or unpleasant smells – Do you smell something musty, or even earthy, in your home? Hidden water can cause mold to grow, and a nasty smell is a good signal that something is wrong.
  3. Peeling paint – Not only can water stain your walls, but it can also cause the paint to lift. If you see your paint starting to peel, quickly find the source of the problem, or call a professional to fix it.
  4. Visual Mold Growth – Just like with ceilings, we don’t exactly pay attention to the corners of our homes, but often these small hidden areas can tell us about potentially harmful leaks or spills. Check to see if there are any discolored or fuzzy looking spots in isolated corners or hidden areas.
  5. Flooring Effects – When allowed to flow, water naturally seeks the lowest level. This is why rivers flow downstream. Water can seep under your flooring and collect – damaging your sub-floors. Check for and warping or deformation to make sure there is no water hiding beneath the floorboards. When this happens, it is important to act as quickly as possible, so we can restore your flooring to good as new.

If you suspect you have water damage, call SERVPRO of Texarkana now! We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 903-832-4400.

Commercial Property Water Loss and Extraction

11/25/2020 (Permalink)

Water is the single most long-term destructive substance in the indoor environment. It can dissolve or weaken building materials, damage floors and ceilings, and can also cause microbial growth if you don’t fix water damage quickly and professionally.

The faster the water is extracted the less damage to the building structure and contents.

The first thing to do if you are dealing with water damage at your place of business is to remove the water immediately. The faster the water is extracted the less damage to the building structure and contents. In situations, this is not enough. Standing water from carpet, flooring and walls can cause permanent damage if not taken care of in a timely manner

Extracting water in commercial buildings or properties, is a very important part of any large water loss. Fire sprinklers, used to stop fire from spreading, can leave you with wet and soggy office spaces.

Water extraction is used to assist in the prevention of microbial growth from expanding and growing. Extraction of water is also needed to keep floors from buckling. The dehumidifiers and air movers will be placed by the technicians in the necessary areas of the building.

A SERVPRO manager will walk the property with the owner/manager and adjuster explaining the process and to answer any questions they may have about removal of property, items and demo.

How Does an Ozone Generator Remove Odors?

9/2/2020 (Permalink)

First off, you may be wondering, “What is an ozone generator?” An ozone generator is an industrial machine that produces ozone. So now you’re probably asking yourself, “What is ozone?” Many of us may remember learning about the ozone layer in school. The ozone layer is a layer in the Earth’s stratosphere that has trace amounts of ozone.

Up in the stratosphere, the ozone protects us by absorbing most of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth from the sun. While that might sound great, ozone in high concentrations is actually very toxic to humans.

What is Ozone?

Ozone is a colorless, highly reactive, toxic gas with powerful oxidizing properties. It is comprised of three atoms of oxygen rather than the two atoms of oxygen that we breathe. Ozone is naturally occurring as well as man-made. An ozone generator is a man-made way of creating ozone.

So why would we want to create ozone if it is toxic to humans? Because ozone is very good at removing particles in the air that cause odor. It is the ultimate air purifier which is why it is used by industrial clean up companies like SERVPRO of Texarkana.

How Does Ozone Remove Odors?

Ozone removes the smell and odors by reacting and destroying the offensive smelling particulates, molecules, and bacteria. The ozone chemically reacts with them breaking them down into molecules and particulates and bacteria that don’t smell.

When Should Ozone Be Used?

An ozone generator is recommended for professional-use only, due to the dangers of high concentrations of ozone. Ozone generators and ozone are used to remove odors that seem impossible to remove. They can be used to remove the smell of cigarette smoke from a home that has been heavily smoked in.

They can also be used to remove the smoke odors from homes and businesses that have experienced a fire. Ozone is highly effective at removing odors due to the fact that it can penetrate anything that oxygen and smoke can penetrate. This can include fabric sofas and carpets in a home that has experienced smoke damage.

Due to the toxicity of the ozone gas, ozone generators are only used in spaces that are unoccupied and sealed. This means that if they are used in a home or business, they space usually needs to be evacuated while the ozone generator is in use. That is why it is highly recommended that you rely on professionals who are trained on how to safely operate an ozone generator.

Struggling to Get Rid of Strong Odors in Your Home or Business?

If you have strong odors that you have been battling for months and even years to get rid of, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Texarkana to get rid of them. They’ll be able to determine the best actions to take including whether an ozone generator is needed.

The experts at SERVPRO of Texarkana have helped remediate the odors from fires, flooding, mold damage and other sources for years. They have all the tools and experience to handle any disaster and any smell. Call SERVPRO of Texarkana today 903-832-4400.

Signs your roof is leaking

Your Residential Roof May Leaking, Look For The Six Signs

Six Signs That Your Roof Is Leaking

As many plumbing experts know, leaking roofs can cause a plethora of unwanted problems such as water damage in your home. If these problems pop up, they can adversely affect your emotional and economic equilibrium. For this reason, it's good to be able to detect signs of a leaky roof early. In so doing, you can attain the professional assistance necessary to correct the problem and prevent structural damage to your property. With that idea in mind, consider whether you're experiencing any of the following six signs of a leaky roof:

 1. A Loss of Granules

The granules of your roof's shingles can grow loose as a result of aging and ongoing exposure due to water damage. When your shingles start to lose their granules, the roof is subjected to faster deterioration.

 2. Buckling Shingles

The shingles of your roof can start to buckle as a result of hot air coming from your attic. This hot air is an indication of poor ventilation and can lead to a build-up of moisture.

 3. Mold And Mildew Growth

If you notice mold growing inside your home or on the roof, the growth could have been caused by a leaky roof. This is the case because a leaky roof will create the excess water and moist environment that mold likes to thrive in.

 4. Roof Rot

Another sign of a leaky roof is roof rot. Roof rot is a term that refers to the process of your roof deteriorating rapidly. When this rapid deterioration transpires, your property can become increasingly susceptible to water damage because of potential leaks.

 5. Damaged Skylights

Damaged skylights can cause your rainwater to leak into the home and cause water damage.

 6. Damaged Flashing

When your flashing is improperly sealed or damaged against your roof, it can make it much simpler for excess water to start seeping into your home.

If you find that your property has been subjected to a leaky roof, you need to address and resolve the issue immediately. The best course of action is to contact a team of trained, IICRC-certified water damage remediation specialists. The team to trust is SERVPRO. All of our technicians will offer you the goal-oriented, detail-centered care necessary to restore your property with lightning speed

How to tell if something is dry...

7/22/2020 (Permalink)

You cannot use your hands to adequately determine if something is dry because skin has a moisture content of 25 percent. Dry wood for example, has a moisture content of about 10 percent. If you feel wood that has moisture content of 20 percent, your skin tells your brain the wood is dry because it is drier than your skin. In actuality it is twice as wet as it should be. Just because it feels dry to you it might be saturated with water and not drying it properly could cause even more damage.

The Franchise Professionals here at SERVPRO of Texarkana is equipped with the right equipment to help ensure a structure and contents are quickly and thoroughly dried after water damage.

Cleaning Kitchen Cabinets after Fire Damage

6/30/2020 (Permalink)

A Fire In Your  Home Can Lead To a Variety Of Problems You Will Face

If your home suffers a kitchen fire, you are not alone. Research confirms that approximately 44 percent of home fires begin in the kitchen. An accidental bump of a pan or drips of grease or oil over the side can raise a ball of fire. Cotton towels or potholders too near a gas flame or touching an electric burner can be the ignition. Food neglected or forgotten, desirable browning turning to blackening in a saute pan or oven, are other risks that can transform your cheerful kitchen into a sooty, smelly mess.

A Special Type of Residue

The soot created is particularly challenging for restorers. The visible surfaces of your wooden kitchen cabinets can be covered entirely in the protein-based soot, which is dehydrated residues of meats, oils and grease, and other foods. Although the coating appears nearly transparent, it is a significant issue, challenging to remove because it clings tenaciously, almost becoming one with the cabinets. The smell is pungent and distasteful, persistently present until removal of all the residue.

Wooden Cabinet Cleaning Steps

SERVPRO follows the restoration industry’s best practices when resolving fire damage to kitchen cabinets. Our crew trains to the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) specifications, an international standards-setting organization. Our technicians might use all or some of the following strategies.

Soot Removal Techniques -- Prepping for Cleaning

  • Remove loose debris with a vacuum, holding the tool slightly above surfaces to prevent forcing particles into the wood.
  • Use a dry chemical sponge to remove embedded soot, taking care not to grind residues into wood fibers.
  • Wipe all wood surfaces with a clean towel or cloth dampened with a proprietary cleaning or prepping solution selected after pretesting.
  • Consider the use of 0000-grade steel wool to dislodge the varnish-like protein-based residue, always working in the direction of the wood grain.

Cleaning Techniques

  • Use fine-grit sandpaper to reduce charring and remove burn and soot stains.
  • Wipe with a tack cloth after sanding.
  • Apply SERVPRO’s cream wood restoration polish and permit a brief dwell time to loosen soiling.
  • Work the polish into the cabinets, following the wood grain. We monitor and undesired damage to the surface as we work, adding additional cream to cushion if needed.
  • Remove excess cream polish with a clean, soft towel. Buff to return to the pre-existing finish.

Trust SERVPRO of Texarkana to assess and plan appropriately when a kitchen fire damages wooden cabinets. As soon as the scene is cleared for cleaning, call us at (903) 832-4400 for an evaluation and implementation of a proven recovery agenda.

Covid-19 Cleaning Service

6/29/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Texarkana is all about cleaning, and the coronavirus has them doing it at an even deeper level.

The company's primary mission is cleaning and disinfecting real estate, home, business and other places, like churches, said owner Melissa Burkett.

"We are about biological sanitation and decontamination," she said. "When COVID came up, that turned into a natural extension of what we do anyway. We follow CDC (Centers for Disease Control) guidelines and generally have three levels of cleaning. Our precautionary cleanings take about 30 minutes, and are idea for, say, a business, church or the like reopening again to the public. This is a good preemptive measure."

SERVPRO offers deeper cleanings, too, that can vary in time taken to apply, depending mainly on the size of the property being decontaminated.

"Our approach involves a decontaminating fog, combined with hand decontamination of all hard and frequently touched surfaces," she said.

Most often, SERVPRO is called to do precautionary treatments.

"We can deal with a wide variety of contaminants, not just COVID," she said. "As an example, Randy Sams (Outreach Shelter) is a regular client. We go through on a regular basis and make sure flu is not a problem there, but this also works against a variety of other biological nastiness."

She says her company provides the service free to them as a community service.

Burkett opened her business because after accompanying her husband, a retired Navy veteran, to Texarkana she decided she wanted to try something different.

She previously had a title holding business and dabbled in restoring real estate.

"But when we got here just after the '08 market downturn, considering it was real estate-based, coming into a new market under those conditions, trying to get a new business in those fields under those conditions just did not work," she said. "So while investigating other possibilities, I helped a friend in another town get a SERVPRO business going. When they managed to both pay me back and get out of debt in five years, I decided I had found my business."

The Difference Between Mitigation and Restoration

8/30/2019 (Permalink)

Water mitigation in Texarkana, AR.

During a storm, your building may suffer some damage. When this happens, it can be good to know the difference between mitigation and restoration before hiring a flood cleanup company.

Understanding what mitigation and restoration are and how the processes pertain to the cleanup and repair of your building is important. Here are some differences between the two:

  1. Mitigation comes first: If your building has been harmed during a storm, one of the first things you should do is make sure it will not sustain any further damage. During mitigation, a flood cleanup company can provide services, such as removing water and boarding up windows, to keep water from spreading and increasing the problems with your building.
  2. Mitigation is usually finished quickly: With mitigation, the company does not usually make any repairs to your building. The job here is simply to prevent any further harm. Because of this, the mitigation process is done as quickly as possible so that restoration can begin, as the restoration company can only start repairing your building after mitigation has finished.
  3. Restoration can be lengthy: Repairs are done during the restoration process, so it can often take much longer than mitigation. Depending on the extent of damage during the storm, the restoration process can take months to complete.

Mitigation vs. Restoration: Which Do You Need?

If your building has suffered damage during a storm, you may be wondering which of these services you need. The answer is that you will likely need both. Having mitigation done before you begin repairs can save a lot of work and trouble in the long run. If you begin repairs without mitigation first, you may end up needing to do more fixes than you would have otherwise.

Mitigation and restoration are services that go well together since they each offer something that the other does not. When you are searching for a flood cleanup company you should call SERVPRO of Texarkana, we offer both mitigation and restoration services. When you call us, you can feel confident that your property will be properly dried and restored.

How a Quick Response Can Benefit a Restoration

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

Drying an extensive water loss in a local home

When water damage strikes a residential or commercial property in the Texarkana, TX area, a lot of damage can occur over a 24 hour time period. A water damage restoration service company needs to have the ability to move quickly in order to prevent the worst. A quick response time can benefit a restoration in a number of ways.

Water Damage Grows Worse Over Time

Water damage has the ability to grow worse the longer it's left to sit. Some of the problems that could arise include the following:

  • Staining from bleeding carpet, furniture
  • Tarnishing in metal objects
  • Warping in books and other paper goods
  • Swollen drywall
  • Warping in wood floors, sub-floors, and door-frames
  • Potential mold problems
  • Peeling paint

Quick Cleanup Can Prevent Further Problems

The quicker you can begin the drying and cleanup process, the fewer problems you may have. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Texarkana offers a 24 hour fast response time that can get a professional to your property to begin the assessment and plan for repairs before the damage becomes too great. In many cases that use of a dehumidifier may be incorporated to dry the property, and sanitation measures may be taken to prevent mold.

IICRC Certification: What It Is and Why It Matters for Your Restoration

6/30/2019 (Permalink)

Continuing Education Class

IICRC Certification

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification is a nonprofit organization that has been setting the bar for restoration industry standards for years. The IICRC is a globally recognized certification and one that proves that your restoration contractor is capable of doing the job.

1. Proven Knowledge

In order to obtain a restoration and mitigation certificate, technicians must prove knowledge of standard practices and procedures. They cannot receive certification without first attending and completing approved coursework through an approved school and instructor.

2. Required Training

The IICRC also requires training in the latest restoration technologies and techniques through a certified firm. The field of mitigation and restoration is a highly specialized field, and you should make sure that everyone involved in your project is a trained and specialized technician working under a certified firm. Ensuring that everyone is qualified means that you can rest assured that your residence is in good hands under the supervision of a team that has met some of the highest standards in the industry.

3. Continuous Renewals

Becoming a certified disaster restoration specialist in the Ark-La-Tex area is not a one and done kind of process. Both firms and agents must maintain their certifications through continuing education and practice. Every certificate has an expiration, and just because someone was once certified and capable does not mean that they still are. Standards of care change frequently as advances in technology and techniques evolve, and it is essential that you hire a firm that is capable of performing at the standards of today, not yesterday.

The IICRC takes great pride in their certified technicians and firms, and you should too. These individuals and companies have proven their knowledge and ability, and because of that, they have earned the respect of an industry standard setter. Therefore, the next time you are faced with a disaster and the impending work of a restoration, seek out only those professionals and companies that proudly proclaim their certifications.

Floating Carpets and Other Magic SERVPRO of Texarkana Uses to Dry Water Damaged Carpets

6/24/2019 (Permalink)

Water can ruin carpeting and requires fast extraction and drying.

Whenever water loss incidents occur within your home, many areas and items become immediately at risk. Carpeting is a magnet for dust, debris, and dirt already, and when exposed to pooling water, can also quickly become saturated to the subflooring material. Even with conventional drying methods, homeowners often cannot keep up with the exposure and saturation becomes too deep to dry out without professional assistance. Our team can help.

For water removal needs in your home, time is of the essence to get the process started as quickly as possible. The longer that exposure occurs, the more damage that can result. Our SERVPRO team can respond quickly to an emergency like this with extraction equipment and drying tools that can preserve and protect affected materials that did not become too badly saturated or distorted by the water.

Floating carpets is one way that our SERVPRO team can use to recover damp carpeting in your home. We pull up the edges of the carpets from the walls and allow our air movers to blow underneath it. This machine forces heated air into both the subflooring and the carpets when positioned between them, which can help to dry out exposed areas quickly.

While there might be many areas of your home that get affected by a water loss incident, you should rely on the team that can help you restore your property entirely. Give the SERVPRO of Texarkana rapid response team a call anytime 24/7 at (903)832-4400.

Keeping Your HVAC System Healthy

5/31/2019 (Permalink)

A blocked HVAC drain pipe can go un-noticed for an extended period of time resulting in significant and expensive water damage to your home

With the weather turning hot, many of you will be turning on your air-conditioners. Before you do, you should check your HVAC drain line to be sure it is clear of debris and will drain properly – otherwise you may find yourself in need of SERVPRO of Texarkana’s Water Damage Restoration Services.

Here are even more do-it-yourself tips you need to know to keep your HVAC system healthy:

  • Check and replace your air filters often.

The most important thing you can do at home is inspect your air filter. Dirty air filters make your HVAC system less efficient and cause undue strain on its working parts.

Set a reminder each month to check your air filter and replace it if it is dirty or clogged. While the general rule is to change your filter every 30 to 90 days, it may need to be replaced more often if you have pets or open your windows often.

Another thing to consider is purchasing a new high-efficiency pleated air filter. The folds in these filters trap more small particles than traditional filters, keeping your system clean and your family healthy.

  • Keep your AC and heating systems free of debris.

If you have an outdoor unit, it is important to keep the system free of debris. Check your unit every week or so for leaves, pollen, dirt, sticks or other debris. Clear the debris from the top and sides of the system using gloves and, if necessary, a hose. This allows for maximum airflow to the fan and increases your unit’s efficiency and lifespan.

In order to ensure the cleanest system possible, try to remove anything that blocks air flow to the system, leaving about two feet of space around the unit.

  • Clean your registers

Try to keep your registers and ducts clean of dust and debris. Be sure to wipe down your registers as often as possible to keep dust and debris out of your system.

  • Give your humidifier a vacation.

In order to give your system a rest in the summer, turn off your furnace humidifier’s water supply. When the cooler months approach, replace the water panel (also know as humidifier pad), set the relative humidity between 35 and 45 percent, and turn the water supply to the furnace humidifier back on.

  • Listen for unusual noises.

One more passive things you can do is to keep an ear open for odd noises when your system is running. Often times, noises in your system are created by register blockages, debris in the vents, or loose bolts on the furnace or registers.

Keep in mind that your HVAC system is exactly that — a system. As it works, it will make noise. Hearing the motor running or humming, as wells as the fans blowing or air moving through the vents, is totally normal. However, unnatural sounds like rattling, hissing or clanking, or the sounds becoming loud enough to be disruptive, can be signs of problems; and you should consider calling a professional HVAC technician to take a look before the system goes out.

  • Use fans to give your system a break.

Another passive way to keep your system healthy is to use fans when possible to give your system a break.

On hot summer days, use ceiling fans and portable fans to circulate air through the house and help your HVAC system bring the temperature in your home down quicker.

On cooler days, instead of programming your thermostat, open your windows and turn on your fans to circulate the cool air into the house and keep temperatures comfortable.

Giving your system a break when you can will lengthen the life of equipment and save you money on your energy bills.

April Showers Bring May Flowers

4/22/2019 (Permalink)

April showers help to bring us the most vibrant May flowers and we are so happy with this change of season.

However, when April showers are more like torrential, relentless downpours we could face water damage causing costly repairs. Flooding generally occurs in the springtime as the result of heavy rains that cannot be adequately absorbed by the still thawing earth. Particularly formidable are the flash floods resulting from thunderstorms, swiftly melting snow and ice jams in creeks. Consider if more than one of these circumstances happens at the same time, you have the potential for a catastrophe with flooding waters and raging mudslides.

Homeowners you can take some simple precautions to secure your property and keep your possessions safe.

ElevateKeep your furnace, water heater, electrical panels above predicted water levels to protect yourself from costly home replacements.

Install check valvesThese valves close to prevent the backward flow of liquid and prevent water from backing up into the drains in your home.

Build barriers: Use sandbags to create flood walls to prevent or reduce flow of water into your home.

Waterproof the basementUse a waterproofing compound to seal the walls of your basement.

Clean: Clean gutters, drains and downspouts for proper water flow.

Purchase flood insurance: Most standard homeowners' and business insurance policies unfortunately do no cover flood damage. In the event of a flood, you would be responsible for covering the full cost of repairs and replacing items damaged.

SERVPRO of Texarkana provides emergency cleaning and restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—including all holidays. You can expect an immediate response time, day or night.

National Window Safety Week

4/3/2019 (Permalink)

The first full week in April is National Window Safety Week

Each year, the Window Safety Task Force of the National Safety Council takes the first full week in April to educate on the importance of practicing window safety year-round. National Window Safety Week is designed to increase awareness on helping to prevent window falls and the proper use of windows for emergency escape purposes.

Every year, about eight children under the age of five die from falling out a window. And over 3,300 are injured seriously enough to need to visit the hospital.

HOW TO OBSERVE

  • When young children are around, keep windows closed and locked.
  • When opening a window for ventilation, use those located out of a child’s reach. For example, the upper sash of a double-hung window.
  • Avoid placing furniture near windows to prevent young children from climbing.
  • Don’t allow children to jump on beds or other furniture to help reduce potential falls.
  • Don’t rely on insect screens to prevent a window fall. Insect screens are designed to keep bugs out, not to keep children in the home.
  • Supervise children to keep child’s play away from windows, balconies or patio doors.
  • Keep play in the center of a room, if possible, Install code-compliant devices designed to limit how far a window will open or window guards (with quick-release mechanisms in case of fire) to help prevent a fall.
  • Teach children how to safely use a window to escape during an emergency, such as a fire.

For more information you can read more on the National Safety Council website.

The Science of Drying

3/14/2019 (Permalink)

Wood Floor Drying Mat

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? Having the knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, your local SERVPRO of Texarkana Professionals are trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business suffers a water damage, our technicians will:
• Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
• Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.
• Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does it mean to help “speed up Mother Nature”? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture
will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material–but only if the air is, indeed, drier.  The only problem is, nature takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.

At SERVPRO of Texarkana, we have the tools and equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors (seen in the photo), tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. We also use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

The bottom line? Your local SERVPRO of Texarkana technicians have the training and equipment  to help make water damage “Like it never even happened."

Severe Storm Threat

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

Weekend Storm Forecast

With severe storms in the forecast for this weekend, here are some things you should know to be better prepared.

All thunderstorms are dangerous and produce lightning. On average lightning kills 51 people and injures hundreds more in the US each year. Dangers associated with thunderstorms include strong winds, flash flooding, hail, and even tornadoes.

To prepare for a thunderstorm:

  • Secure outdoor items.
  • Postpone or cancel outdoor activities.
  • Go inside - if you can't reach a building, get in a hard-top vehicle.
  • Secure doors and windows. Close blinds, curtains, or shutters.
  • Unplug electronics.

When a thunderstorm occurs:

  • Remember this phrase: "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors". Go inside during thunderstorms.
  • Listen to a battery-operated radio such as a NOAA Weather Radio for updates and information.
  • Unplug electronics and appliances to prevent damage from lightning-caused power surges.
  • Water conducts electricity. Water-based activities and chores should be avoided during a thunderstorm.
  • Windows, porches, and doorways can be dangerous in storms - stay inside.
  • If you can't get inside, try to avoid natural lightning rods - like a large tree in an open field, and try not to be the tallest thing on a hill, open field, or beach.
  • Try not to touch metal - including your car - metal conducts electricity.
  • Stay in your car if you're driving. Pull over and turn on your hazard lights until heavy rain ends.

 After the storm passes:

  • Never drive through a flooded roadway. Turn around, don't drown!
  • Stay away from storm-damaged areas.
  • Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or local radio and television stations for updated information or instructions.
  • Help people who may require special assistance, such as infants, children and the elderly or those with access or functional needs.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.
  • Keep a close eye on your pets to keep them safe.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Texarkana are highly trained and certified. From initial and ongoing training at SERVPRO's Corporate Training Facility to regular IICRC industry certifications, our Professionals are equipped with the knowledge they need to help with any water or fire loss.

Avoid Scams After a Storm

2/18/2019 (Permalink)

Storm Damage

When your dealing with a natural disaster such as a storm, tornado, or hurricane, you can be sure that scammers will be around the corner. If the community has been affected the con-artist come to call. Most of us trust people willing to step in for the cause. We believe in our fellow man. Typically, they will offer to do work for a certain price, ask for a portion of the payment up front-in cash and then they use an excuse to leave and disappear forever. Here are some tips to avoid scams in a storm situation.

  • Go local.
  • Always get the proposal in writing
  • Never pay more than one-third of the cost up front.
  • Never let someone force you to make a quick decision.
  • Don't pay in cash.
  • Do not fall for the first offer that comes along
  • Ask around to family and friends for a trusted company.

Scammers have no shame in taking from those in distress. A disaster can cause a lot of stress and make you scramble for help as soon as possible. Take your time and avoid being scammed.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Texarkana will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Washing Machine Maintenance

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Washing machines are our best friends! They take all the hard work out of doing laundry and allow us to sit and relax while we watch Sunday football, however did you know that washing machines failures are one of the most common was your home can flood? It’s true! While there are many different ways water from a washing machine can cause damage, the main reason is the water supply hose.

To keep from experiencing unexpected water damage in your home, you should be sure to do routine inspections of your supply lines. If the line is loose, tighten it up a bit. Look for any worn tubing or cracks and any worn hoses should be replaced. A good rule of thumb is to replace your supply line every five years, even if you don’t see any visible sign of wear. Try and upgrade to a braided steel one, as they’ll last longer and can hold up to more.

If you’re going to be away from your home from any length of time, you should shut off the valve to make sure nothing can happen by accident while you’re away.

If you have had any water damaged caused by an appliance, give SERVPRO of Texarkana a call today! 903-832-4400

How To Tell If Your Floor Has Water Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

No floor is safe from water damage. Water can seep down to the sub floor or even seep up from a slab leak. It’s pretty easy to tell whether or floor has had any water damage, and with these tips, you’ll be able to spot it fairly quickly. Each floor type has a different set of signs of water damage, so familiarize yourself with all of the signs to prevent unpleasant surprises.

Carpet shows discoloration and an odor from mold or mildew.

Tile which has discoloration could mean it has water damage. Another trick is to tap on the tiles with a coin. If you hear an empty or hollow sound it means the tiles are loose and that it could be water damage.

Hardwood flooring has four main signs that water damage has occurred. The first sign is buckling which means the floor planks have completely removed themselves from the floor under them. Next, are dark spots – which could just be a part of the wood’s natural pattern, but if it’s a fairly new spot it is most likely mold or mildew. Third, is bulging which is when the wood planks bubble upwards and create sort of a crown shape. Lastly, is cupping. With cupping, the planks will have dips in the center and raised edges.

Laminate flooring usually sports swelling around the edges. Warping also occurs when the planks aren’t flat and are cupping or bulging. Discoloration could mean mold or mildew.

Linoleum flooring that is showing discoloration could mean that there is water damage.

If you suspect your floor has had water damage, call SERVPRO of Texarkana at 3-832-4400.
